The cocker spaniel is the breed of gun dog. There are various types of cockers each differing in weights. They have a nick name as “merry cocker” as they are happy often wagging their tails. They are very adorable sturdy compact and well balanced dog. They are alert and very shrewd. It is probably 15 inches in height, female are smaller than males.

They require only less exercise to be followed they consume less amount of food and also less space to dwell. They should not put more weight so proper care should be taken to the amount of its intake and exercises done by it.

They love to be with people but if trained to be alone for a particular duration they can manage. They are very obedient pet and easily train up with the general commands taught.

The commands generally used are:

Hub: to sit and stay

Retrieve to hand: deliver the hunted animal to hand

Quarter: to stay within gun range while hunting

Hand signals: to respond to hunter’s hand signal to direct it to particular area

Steady: to be steady and wing the slot while hunting.

They may be stubborn but when trained properly they can be brought up as a perfect pet. They become intimate with an individual in a family and like to be with them most of the times. They are affectionate, loyal and good companion. Ears and coat should be taken good care to avoid any abnormal health problems.
